Both sides are gravure printed with offset printing shading. The front is a picture of Tiananmen in red; the back is the national emblem and the Chinese, Mongolian, Tibetan and Uighur characters of “People’s Bank of China, One Yuan” in red; a hollow five-pointed star watermark . The number is a three-character ahead and a seven-digit number. The banknote was issued on March 1, 1955, and has only been accepted and not paid since October 20, 1969. It ceased circulation on January 1, 1999. Ticket size is 150 × 67.5 mm (5.91 × 2.66 inches).

On March 1, 1955, the second set of RMB was issued. The ratio of the second set of RMB to the first set is 1:10,000 and is divided into main banknotes and secondary coins. The denominations are: 1 cent, 2 cents, 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, 1 yuan, 2 yuan, 3 yuan, 5 yuan and 10 yuan. One of the denominations, the 3 yuan, was the only issue in the history of the yuan.
