Both sides are gravure printed with offset printing shading. The front is a picture of the unity of all ethnic groups in a purple color. The back is the national emblem and the Chinese, Mongolian, Tibetan and Uighur characters of “People’s Bank of China, Five Yuan”. Sauce purple tone; hollow five-pointed star watermark. The banknote was issued on March 1, 1955, printed in the Soviet Union, and was payable only on April 15, 1964. After the conflict between China and the Soviet Union, a large number of counterfeit Soviet-made banknotes were discovered in Xinjiang. The banknotes ceased circulation on May 15, 1964. The number is preceded by three letters and followed by seven Arabic numerals. Ticket size is 165 × 75 mm (6.5 × 2.95 inches).

Government Announcement on the Issuance of the Second Set of Renminbi
On March 1, 1955, the second set of RMB was issued. The ratio of the second set of RMB to the first set is 1:10,000 and is divided into main banknotes and secondary coins. The denominations are: 1 cent, 2 cents, 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, 1 yuan, 2 yuan, 3 yuan, 5 yuan and 10 yuan. One of the denominations, the 3 yuan, was the only issue in the history of the yuan.
